Heat Pump Installation in Sunnyvale

The short answer

Sunnyvale homes with ducts can usually take a ducted heat pump in place of the furnace, while slab homes with wall heaters or radiant floors are often best suited to ductless systems. EliteAir checks your ducts and electrical panel, sizes the system and confirms current incentives before quoting.

Sunnyvale's housing stock makes heat pumps an especially practical upgrade. A large share of homes are single-story houses from the middle of the last century, many on concrete slabs, heated by an aging gas furnace, a wall heater or in-floor radiant pipes, and cooled by little more than open windows. A heat pump can provide efficient heating through the city's mild, damp winters and real cooling during warm spells, all from one system. EliteAir Heating & Cooling installs ducted and ductless heat pumps throughout Sunnyvale, ZIP codes 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089, working from our San Jose base about eight miles to the southeast. This page explains how we match a heat pump to the type of house you have, what to expect from the electrical side, and where the regional rules and incentives actually stand today.

Matching the system to your house

The starting point is how your home is heated now. That tells us what infrastructure exists and what the easiest path is.

  • Forced-air furnace with ducts: a ducted heat pump usually takes its place, reusing the ducts after inspection and repair
  • Wall furnace or floor furnace: a ductless multi-zone system can heat and cool the main rooms without adding ducts
  • In-floor radiant heat: some homeowners keep the radiant floors and add ductless heads for cooling and shoulder seasons; others move to ductless for both
  • Baseboard or space heaters: ductless heat pumps can replace them with far more efficient heating

Ducts and airflow

If you have ducts, we inspect them closely before recommending a ducted heat pump. Heat pumps deliver warm air at a gentler temperature than a gas furnace, so leaky ducts, crushed runs or undersized returns are more noticeable. In attic duct systems we look for disconnections and missing insulation. If the ducts are in poor shape, we will recommend sealing or replacing sections, or explain why a ductless approach may be a better value.

Electrical capacity

Many older Sunnyvale homes have smaller electrical panels sized for a gas-heated house. A heat pump adds load, and so do an EV charger, an induction range or a heat pump water heater, which often come up in the same conversation. We check your panel size, available breaker spaces and existing loads early in the process. Some homes have room to spare. Others need a panel upgrade or a load management device, and it is better to know that before the project is scheduled.

Rules, credits and incentives

Under Bay Area Air District Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx emission standard, which in practice points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. The Air District rules do not require replacing working equipment; they apply only when an existing furnace or water heater fails or is replaced. If you are also considering a water heater, note that the Rule 9-6 zero-NOx date for small water heaters was set for 2027, and the Air District Board is considering amendments in November 2026 that could delay it, so check the current rule before planning.

The federal 25C credit covered qualifying heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025, and is not available for new installations after that date. BayREN and your local clean energy provider may offer current heat pump and electrification incentives. Amounts and availability change by funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before quoting it.

Sizing and installation

Sunnyvale's climate is moderate, with homes closer to the Bay generally staying milder than those toward the southern edge of town. We size heat pumps with a room-by-room load calculation for both heating and cooling, so the system runs efficiently without short cycling. Variable-speed equipment works well here, running for long stretches at low output and keeping temperatures even.

A ducted replacement typically takes two to three days; a multi-zone ductless system depends on the number of indoor heads. We remove old equipment, set and connect the new system, pressure-test and evacuate the refrigerant lines, commission it in heating and cooling, and show you how to set the thermostat or remotes for best results. We install heat pumps across Sunnyvale and in Mountain View, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills.

What to expect

How a visit goes

  1. Measure first

Temperatures, pressures, electrical readings and airflow come before any recommendation, so the fix addresses the actual fault.

  2. Show and explain

We point out failed parts or readings, describe what they mean, and answer questions until the choice makes sense to you.

  3. Respect the home

Floor protection, careful attic and closet work, and a cleaned-up space before we leave are standard on every visit.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (669) 201-9530 and we’ll talk it through.

Can I install a heat pump in a Sunnyvale slab home without ducts?

Yes. Ductless mini-split heat pumps are designed for homes without ductwork and are common in slab houses.

Can I keep my radiant floor heating and add a heat pump?

Yes. Some homeowners add ductless heads for cooling and mild-weather heating while keeping radiant floors. We discuss the trade-offs.

Will my electrical panel support a heat pump?

We check capacity and existing loads first. Some homes need an upgrade or a load management device.

Is the federal heat pump tax credit still available?

No. The 25C credit applied to heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025.

Are there local heat pump incentives in Sunnyvale?

BayREN and local clean energy providers may offer incentives that change by funding cycle. We confirm the current offer before quoting.
