The short answer
Sunnyvale AC repairs range from capacitors and contactors on central systems to communication faults and clogged drains on ductless mini-splits. EliteAir tests the system, identifies the failed part, explains it plainly and gets your home cooling again.
Sunnyvale summers are mostly comfortable, with Bay breezes cooling things down by evening, so the AC can go weeks without much use. Then a warm spell arrives, the system is switched on for the first long run of the year, and whatever was wearing out quietly the previous season finally fails. In this city we work on everything from conventional central air conditioners in older ranch homes to ductless mini-splits in remodeled slab houses and heat pumps that do double duty. EliteAir Heating & Cooling repairs cooling systems across Sunnyvale, ZIP codes 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089, about eight miles northwest of our San Jose base. Our approach is to test before replacing anything and to explain the problem in terms that make sense. This page breaks repairs down by system type, since a mini-split and a central AC fail in very different ways.
Central air conditioners
Traditional split systems, with an outdoor condenser and an indoor coil on top of the furnace, make up a large share of our Sunnyvale repairs. The usual suspects are electrical: a run capacitor that has lost its strength, a contactor with burned contacts, or a condenser fan motor that has worn out. Each of these can leave the outdoor unit humming without the fan turning, or keep the compressor from starting at all.
Airflow issues come next. A clogged filter, closed registers or a dirty indoor coil can drop the coil temperature until it freezes. If you see ice on the refrigerant line or the system has stopped blowing much air, turn the cooling off and run only the fan to help it thaw before we arrive.
Ductless mini-splits
Mini-splits are common in Sunnyvale homes that never had ducts, and they have their own set of problems. The indoor heads have fine filters and coils that collect dust and can grow mold if they are not cleaned. The condensate line from each head can clog, which may trigger a shutdown or cause water to drip down the wall. Communication errors between indoor and outdoor units often show up as a blinking light or an error code.
We read the error codes, test the sensors, boards and wiring, and clean or clear what is needed. If one head out of several stops working, the problem is often limited to that head or its wiring rather than the outdoor unit.
- Blinking light or error code on the indoor unit
- Water dripping from the head or down the wall
- Musty smell when the unit starts
- One head not cooling while others work
- Outdoor unit running but indoor head blowing room-temperature air
Heat pumps in cooling mode
A heat pump that heats fine in winter but will not cool in summer may have a reversing valve that is stuck, a failed solenoid coil, or a control problem. Low refrigerant from a slow leak affects both modes, though people often notice it first on a hot day. We check the system's performance in cooling mode and, when it is safe to do so, briefly in heating mode to see the full picture.
Refrigerant leaks: find them, do not just refill
If a technician tells you the system is low on refrigerant, the next question should be where it went. Refrigerant circulates in a closed loop, so a low charge means a leak. We look for the leak at common points like the indoor coil, service valves and flare connections on mini-splits, then recommend a repair. Recharging without a repair is a short-term patch, and we will tell you that up front.
Our repair process and service area
Every visit starts with a conversation about what you noticed. We then test the thermostat signal, electrical components, refrigerant pressures and airflow, and give you a diagnosis and repair option before any work begins. Many common parts are on the truck, which lets us finish most repairs on the first visit. Afterward, we run the system and measure the temperature drop to confirm it is cooling properly.
If an older system has had repeated major failures, we will talk honestly about whether repair or replacement makes more sense. We serve all of Sunnyvale and nearby Mountain View, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills.
