The short answer
Los Gatos summers run warmer than Bay-side cities, so a new AC needs accurate sizing and solid ductwork to keep up on long hot afternoons. Older homes without ducts often suit ductless systems, while hillside homes need careful outdoor unit placement and good filtration for smoky days.
Los Gatos sits at the southern edge of the Santa Clara Valley where the flatland meets the foothills, about 7 miles south of our San Jose base. The southern and inland parts of the valley run noticeably hotter in summer than towns near the Bay, and many Los Gatos households feel that difference on long, dry afternoons. A new air conditioner here has a real job to do, but the right system still depends heavily on the kind of house it goes into. EliteAir Heating & Cooling installs cooling across 95030 and 95032, and we plan each project around the building rather than a standard package.
Matching the system to the house
Los Gatos has a wide spread of housing, and three broad situations come up again and again when owners ask about adding or replacing air conditioning.
Older homes near the center of town were often built long before central cooling, with small rooms, plaster walls and little or no attic space for ducts. Mid-century and later ranch and split-level homes usually have forced-air heating with ducts that can be adapted for cooling. Hillside homes up toward the foothills tend to be larger, may have several levels, and often face strong sun on one or more exposures. Each of these leads to a different recommendation.
Options by home type
Here is how we typically approach each situation, always confirmed by a site visit:
- Older homes without ducts: ductless mini-split heat pumps, with compact wall, ceiling or floor heads in the rooms that need them most
- Homes with existing heating ducts: a central AC or heat pump paired with duct modifications to carry the larger cooling airflow
- Two-story and split-level homes: zoning or separate systems so upstairs bedrooms do not overheat while the ground floor runs cold
- Hillside properties: variable-speed equipment for steady comfort and a carefully prepared, well-drained outdoor pad
- Additions and converted garages: a dedicated ductless zone instead of overloading the main system
Sizing for warmer south valley summers
Because summers here run hotter than in cities closer to the Bay, there is a temptation to simply buy a bigger unit. Capacity should come from a room-by-room load calculation instead. That calculation weighs window orientation, attic insulation, shading from trees and neighboring buildings, and the number of people in the home. A correctly sized system runs long enough to dry the air and even out temperatures, while an oversized one short-cycles and leaves some rooms uncomfortable.
Ducts matter just as much. Heating ducts are commonly undersized for cooling airflow, and a new outdoor unit cannot make up for a system that cannot move enough air. We measure and inspect the duct system and include any needed changes in the scope.
Filtration for smoky days
Late summer and fall can bring wildfire smoke into the valley, and on those days many people close the windows and lean on the air conditioner. A new installation is a good moment to improve filtration. Depending on the blower and ducts, that might mean a deeper media filter cabinet or a higher-efficiency filter matched to the airflow the system can handle. We size filtration so it cleans the air without choking the blower.
A heat pump instead of AC alone
A heat pump cools exactly like an air conditioner and also heats in winter, which makes it a strong candidate when the furnace is older. Under Bay Area Air District Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx standard, which in practice points toward heat pumps for future replacements. Working furnaces do not have to be removed, so adding a conventional AC to a healthy furnace remains a sound option.
BayREN and your local clean energy provider publish current heat pump incentives, which change by funding cycle, and we confirm the active offer before including it in a quote. The federal 25C credit applied only to heat pumps placed in service before December 31, 2025.
Our installation area
Besides Los Gatos, we install air conditioning in Monte Sereno, Campbell, Saratoga, Cupertino and Santa Clara. Every job includes permits, refrigerant evacuation and charging to specification, airflow testing and a walkthrough of the thermostat and filter schedule.
